Outrage as 11-year-old girl is raped to death in Lagos
Calls for justice have begun to gain momentum on social media after Favour Okechukwu, an 11-year-old girl, was raped to death in the Ejigbo area of Lagos state.
It is understood that the incident occurred on Wednesday within an uncompleted building along Olarewaju Street, where the little girl was found lifeless and bleeding from the sexual assault.
When contacted, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the state police spokesperson, said investigations are still ongoing on the case while the command hunts the suspects who committed the crime.
“We have information that we cannot release. We’re going to get the three suspects. My comment is we’re on it. We’re going to get the three suspects. That’s all for now,” he told TheCable Lifestyle.
Okechukwu Dickson, the deceased’s father, had narrated how Favour was sent on an errand to purchase a pack of sausage roll and how panic had set in after she failed to return home.
“I was shocked when my wife said Favour hadn’t returned from where she was to collect a carton of the gala because it was unusual of her to stay long outside,” Dickson was quoted as saying.
“I went to three of her classmate’s houses to look for her but they all said they didn’t see her. I was walking like a mad man, asking everyone I saw about her whereabouts and it was getting dark.
“I saw a man who lives on the same street with me and told him I was looking for my daughter. He told me he had to close early because a little girl was raped to death in a building close to his shop.
“I decided to go and check since I was looking for my daughter and he accompanied me to the building. Behold, when I got there, it was my daughter, Favour! She laid motionless.
“I shouted, shook her vigorously as I called out her name, begging her to wake up. But she didn’t respond. I was too shocked to believe she was gone just like that.
“A child I left hale and hearty while leaving the house in the morning, was gone when I returned.”
The development comes months after a student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) died from injuries she sustained after she was attacked and raped inside a near Ikpoba Hill in Benin, Edo state.
Some Nigerians have since taken to Twitter to condemn the persistence of gender-based violence in Nigeria.
